But little did he know, his reign was about to come to an end when he was cornered by the fearless Viking mercenary, Askeladd. The two men engaged in a heated exchange, with Sweyn insulting Askeladd’s mother. The Viking warrior quickly drew his sword and beheaded the King, claiming himself to be the true King of Brittania.
England was thrown into chaos, with Ethelred II returning from Normandy and reclaiming his throne, while Canute also proclaimed himself to be the new King. The political conflict escalated into a brutal war that left the country in poverty.
Canute visited the defeated village of Mercia and was horrified by the atrocities committed by his own men. He ordered them to be executed and their heads displayed on the streets. Canute was then approached by Thorkell who warned him that he would have to use blood and iron to become the King of England. Canute listened and even agreed with the man.
Later, Canute met Earl Eadric who tried to bribe him to leave Mercia, but Canute refused and asked Eadric to betray King Ethelred II. When Eadric refused, Canute had him and his son taken outside where a giant pyre was lit. The sight of smoke rising from all around the village symbolized what it would mean to fight Canute. Eadric was haunted by the sight and eventually started working for Canute secretly.
The following year, King Ethelred II and his son Edmund both died under mysterious circumstances, clearing the way for Canute to officially become the King of England.
